Story: A King is pleased with his poet and wants to bestow a present on him. He asks his poet, “What can I give you of all that I have?” “Anything,” the poet replies, “Except your secrets.”

On 25 December, an empty plane flies over Barcelona airport. Why? This film explains all.

Munich: Van Stratten is looking for Jakob Zouk so that he can complete his confidential report, collect his $15,000 fee and save both their lives. Zouk has just been released from jail and does not want to know. Van Stratten tells him the whole story…

Naples: Night, the docks, a chase between two men. Bracco is knifed, falls and wants revenge for his death. Bracco tells Van Stratten and Mily that they can earn a fortune – he tells Mily his dying words. The other man, a peg-leg, shoots at the police, is shot and falls dead into the water. Van Stratten is arrested by the police for trying to smuggle cigarettes. What did Bracco say? “Arkadin, Gregory Arkadin.”

Released from prison, Van Stratten pursues the incredibly rich Arkadin and decides to reach the elusive millionaire through his daughter Raina. After meeting her at a club, she is collected by the invisible Arkadin. Van Stratten meets Mily, now part of Arkadin’s party crowd, and they decide to blackmail Arkadin together - if only Mily could remember the other name Bracco told her.

Spain: Van Stratten gets a lift to Spain with Raina, watched by Arkadin’s personal secretaries, who are Arkadin’s private spy network. “The Ogre,” she calls her father, like a monster in a nursery rhyme, up in his castle. At a religious ceremony that night, Raina explains that the penitents wore chains and walked barefoot because they are sorry for their sins. “They must be awful sorry,” Mily comments.

Raina and Van Stratten spend the week together, chasing, flirting, until they kiss.

Arkadin’s party in the castle is a masquerade, with many of the guests wearing Goya masks. Arkadin introduces himself to Van Stratten, leads him to Raina’s room and shows him the confidential report he has assembled on Guy Van Stratten, or should that be Streetheimer. Angry, Van Stratten says that somebody should do a confidential report on Arkadin - what secrets would people find out about him?

Storming out, Van Stratten goes to Mily, who says she remembered the other name Bracco told her: Sophie.

Arkadin summons Van Stratten and hires him, for a $15,000 fee, to prepare a confidential report about Arkadin’s past. Arkadin is undergoing an intelligence check by the United States Army.
